Freeze Precautions
Winterization Freeze Precautions
A Winterization is a precautionary measure taken to protect your underground irrigation system during freezing weather. During the service, the technician will evacuate any remaining water at high pressure to protect the system from freezing weather conditions. We will remove the backflow preventer. Your backflow should be stored in a non-freezing environment until Vanderwist returns to complete the turn-on in the spring. As we cannot predict the severity of winter weather, a winterization does not guarantee the elimination spring repair work.
If Freezing Conditions occur before your winterization is complete, do the following:
1. First, turn the water off at the shut off point before running the controller. Make sure to also un-plug the pump, if the system utilizes a pump.
2. Run the controller on semi-automatic or manual all zones two times.
3. Be sure to wrap any exposed copper lines or backflow preventers.
- Examples: You could use a towel & tape or even newspaper & plastic wrap.
This should adequately protect your system until we are able to make your appointment.
